“I was shocked.
This is a law that I didn’t expect,” Ms. O’Leary said.
“The idea that it would make it so difficult to find an attorney is just outrageous.”
In addition to the costs of obtaining a lawyer’s services, she said, the new law also threatens the ability of legal aid lawyers to provide free legal assistance to the elderly and the poor.
The law would make sure that those who can afford it can’t, she added.
A lawyer could find herself in the same predicament as someone who can’t afford a lawyer.
“It’s very frustrating,” Ms.’
Leary said, adding that lawyers can find themselves in a “no win, no fee” situation.
She and others like her have filed a complaint with the federal government and are seeking an injunction.
“What they’re trying to do is take money from people who are just trying to make ends meet,” Ms.,Leary said of the proposed changes.
“I can’t believe they’re going to do that.
They should be doing this for people like me.”
